Phone interview questions: 30 spoken answers for the telephonic round, setup checklist and fake-call signs

The telephonic round is the shortest interview you will give and the one most people lose. A recruiter, a consultancy or a campus pre-screener calls, usually without warning, and in ten to fifteen minutes decides whether your resume reaches the hiring manager. This page gives phone interview questions as they are actually asked in India, with 30 spoken answers that fit a call: shorter than a face-to-face answer, with the fact first. It also covers setup, network and noise, switching between Hindi and English, and how to tell a real recruiter call from a fake one.

What the telephonic round is for, and who calls

A phone screen has one purpose: to confirm that the person on the resume exists, matches the role on paper, and will join on the terms the company can offer. The caller is rarely the person you will work for. In product companies and larger firms it is an in-house recruiter; for most mid-size companies it is a placement consultancy hired to send three shortlisted candidates per role; for campus and off-campus drives it is a pre-screening call to confirm eligibility, documents and willingness to relocate before the test. They work from a checklist, type while you speak, and make twenty such calls a day.

That changes what a good answer looks like. Nobody on a screening call wants a two-minute story. They want the fact in the first sentence, one line of support, and silence so they can type. The 30 answers below are written for that: most are thirty to forty-five seconds spoken. If the call turns out to be a full technical or manager interview on the phone, use the longer answers in HR interview questions with answers and interview questions and answers for freshers, delivered more slowly than you would in a room.

The first fifteen seconds decide the call

Answer with your name, not 'hello'. Repeat the company name back, ask for the caller's name and the role, and write both down. Then say whether you can talk now: 'Yes, I can speak for fifteen minutes' or 'Could you call at 1 pm' are both fine. Mumbling 'haan bolo' while walking down a corridor is how good candidates get marked as uninterested.

Setup checklist: fix these before the phone rings

  • Save every number you have applied through, and let unknown numbers ring to a plain ring tone. A recruiter who hears a caller tune for thirty seconds often hangs up.
  • Keep the exact resume you uploaded and a one-page status sheet: current CTC with fixed and variable split, expected CTC, notice period, degree percentages, last three employers with dates. Screeners ask these in order, and hesitation on your own CTC reads as dishonesty.
  • Decide the room in advance: a closed room, a parked car or a quiet stairwell. If you are caught outside, say so and ask for ten minutes.
  • Use wired earphones or the phone at your ear, never the speaker; it makes you sound distant and picks up every fan.
  • Check signal and battery daily during an active search. Two dropped calls and the consultancy moves to the next name.
  • Have the job description open and a pen ready. Screeners ask 'do you have experience in X' straight from the JD, and they will give you a date, an address and an email you will otherwise forget.
  • Sit upright and smile; it changes your voice, which is why call-centre trainers teach it. If the call comes cold, ask 'Could you tell me a little about the role while I pull up my notes?' and listen for the client, location and shift.

Opening and status questions: 8 answers

Hi, am I speaking to Priya? This is Rohan from a recruitment firm regarding an opening. Is this a good time to talk?

Yes, this is Priya. Hello Rohan. I can talk for about fifteen minutes now. Could you tell me which company and which role this is for, so that I have the right details in front of me? And may I note your name and your firm's name, please?

Screener checks: reachable, polite, organised. Asking for the role is expected, not rude.

Tell me about yourself briefly.

I am a mechanical engineer with three years at a Pune auto-component supplier, currently a quality engineer handling supplier audits and line rejections for two Tier-1 customers. In that time I brought rejection PPM on the brake-assembly line down from about 900 to under 400. Before that, B.E. from Nagpur, 7.8 CGPA. I am looking to move into a plant quality role with a larger OEM, which is why this opening interested me. I am on a one-month notice, negotiable.

Screener checks: role, years, one number, current status, under forty seconds. The full story is for the manager; see tell me about yourself.

Say this answer out loud

Are you currently working? What is your notice period?

Yes, with an IT services company in Chennai as a software engineer. My notice period is ninety days, but the company allows buyout, and I have about fifteen days of leave that can be adjusted. Realistically I can join in forty-five to sixty days, and I can confirm exactly once I have an offer letter to show HR.

Screener checks: a real joining date. 'Negotiable' with no number is weak; give the honest range.

Say this answer out loud

What is your current CTC and expected CTC?

My current CTC is 6.4 lakh, of which 5.8 is fixed and the rest is an annual variable. For this move I am expecting 8.5 to 9 lakh, because the role is a level up with client ownership. I am flexible within that range for the right role, and I would rather know early if the budget is different.

Screener checks: the fixed-variable split and whether you fit the band. Never inflate current CTC; it is verified against salary slips.

Say this answer out loud

Why are you looking for a change?

Two reasons. I have been on the same banking client for two and a half years and the project is in maintenance mode, so no new work is coming. And I want to work on cloud migration, which my current account does not do. I am not unhappy with the company; I want the next level of work, and this role describes it.

Screener checks: a reason that is not salary alone or a complaint about the manager.

Say this answer out loud

Have you applied to this company before, or are you in process with them?

I applied for a different role, a business analyst opening, through their careers page in March and was not shortlisted. I have not been contacted since, and I am not in process with any other consultancy for this company. Please go ahead and submit my profile.

Screener checks: duplicate profiles, which get both you and the consultancy rejected. The applicant tracking system knows.

Say this answer out loud

Are you a fresher? Which year did you pass out, and do you have any backlogs?

Yes, 2026 pass-out, B.Tech in computer science from a college in Bhubaneswar, CGPA 7.9, no active backlogs. I had one backlog in second year, engineering mathematics, cleared in the next attempt. I have my provisional certificate and all mark sheets in hand.

Screener checks: eligibility against a cut-off and document readiness. Volunteer the cleared backlog; the mark sheet shows it anyway.

Say this answer out loud

This call is for a drive on Saturday at our Noida office. Will you be able to attend?

Yes, I can attend on Saturday. Could you confirm the reporting time and full address, and whether I should carry a printed resume, photographs and ID proof? And could you send the details by email or SMS so that I have them in writing? My email is on my resume.

Screener checks: commitment and low no-show risk. Written confirmation also protects you; see interview call letter and message format.

Role-fit and skills questions: 10 answers

The screener now matches you against the job description line by line. The questions sound technical but are checklist questions: a yes, a number of years, one example. Keep each under forty seconds and do not teach the recruiter the subject.

The role needs hands-on experience in SQL and Python. How many years do you have in each?

SQL, about three years, daily: reporting queries, joins and stored procedures on SQL Server for a retail client. Python, about a year and a half: I automated our monthly reconciliation with pandas, so it runs in ten minutes instead of a day. I would rate myself seven in SQL and five in Python, and I am comfortable being tested on either.

Screener checks: years and a use, typed into the form. A self-rating helps them place you.

Say this answer out loud

Do you have experience in customer handling or support?

Yes. For two years I have handled chat and email support for a fintech app, around sixty tickets a day, with an average CSAT of 4.6 out of 5. Before that, eight months on a voice process for a telecom client. So I am comfortable with both written and voice support, including escalations where a customer has lost money and is upset.

Screener checks: channel, volume and a metric. Support roles are screened on this question and your spoken English.

Say this answer out loud

This is a night-shift role with rotational weekly offs. Are you comfortable with that?

Yes. I have worked a 6 pm to 3 am shift for a US client for fourteen months, so I know what it does to sleep and I have a routine for it. Rotational offs are fine. One question: does the company provide cab drop for the night shift? I live about twelve kilometres from the Hinjewadi office.

Screener checks: a yes with evidence, since shift refusals after an offer waste everyone's time.

Say this answer out loud

The position is in Hyderabad. Are you open to relocating?

Yes. I have lived in Bengaluru for four years away from my family in Kolkata, so moving cities is not new, and my cousin is in Gachibowli. I would need two to three weeks after the joining date is fixed to arrange accommodation. Is the role fully work-from-office, or hybrid?

Screener checks: a real yes. Consultancies will not forward a profile that says 'will think about it'.

Say this answer out loud

Do you have a valid passport, and are you willing to travel to client locations?

Yes, passport valid until 2031. I have travelled for work before, three weeks at a client site in Coimbatore for a go-live. Short and medium assignments are fine; for anything above six months at a stretch I would want to discuss it with the manager because of my parents' health. For a short onsite visit, no issue.

Screener checks: documents and willingness. Limits stated now save a refusal later.

Say this answer out loud

Have you worked in the healthcare domain, since the client is a US hospital chain?

Not directly. My two years have been on an insurance client, which overlaps with healthcare on claims processing and data handling, and I did a two-week training on US healthcare basics, including ICD codes and the provider-payer flow, when my company bid for a hospital project. So I know the vocabulary; I have not sat on a hospital project yet. I would be happy to take a short domain test.

Screener checks: whether 'no' is a hard no. A near-domain with specifics usually gets the profile through.

Say this answer out loud

Are you comfortable with a six-month contract role that may convert to permanent?

I would prefer a permanent role, and I want to be honest about that. I am open to this if two things are clear: the conversion criteria in writing, and the contract pay on par with or above the permanent band, since there is no gratuity or bonus for the period. If both hold, yes, please proceed.

Screener checks: whether you will drop out at offer stage. A conditional yes with clear conditions is respected.

Say this answer out loud

You have changed two jobs in three years. Why?

The first move, after fourteen months, was from a small Jaipur agency to a mid-size company because the agency shut its design team. The second, after twenty months, was a role change from graphic design to UI design, which I have done for the last year. Neither was a salary jump for its own sake. I want to stay three to five years now, which is why a product company attracts me.

Screener checks: a reason per move and a commitment going forward. Job-hopping is the commonest reason a consultancy drops a profile.

Say this answer out loud

Do you have your original documents and last three months' salary slips available for verification?

Yes. All original degree certificates and mark sheets, offer and relieving letters from my previous company, six months of salary slips and Form 16 for two years. I can share scanned copies after you send the role details from your official email ID.

Screener checks: readiness for background verification. Sharing only after an official email is sensible, not suspicious.

Say this answer out loud

Do you have any pending offers, or are you interviewing elsewhere?

I am in the final round with one company in Pune for a similar role and expect to hear within two weeks; no offer letter in hand. I am telling you so you can plan the timeline. If this company can complete its rounds within ten days, I will compare the two fairly on the role, not just the number.

Screener checks: urgency and honesty. Inventing an offer backfires when they ask for the letter.

Say this answer out loud

Short HR and closing questions: 12 answers

Recruiters often end a screen with a few HR questions to judge communication, especially for client-facing, sales and support roles where the call is itself the English test. Keep answers to three or four sentences; the longer versions are in most common interview questions.

What do you know about our company?

From your website and the job post, you are a Gurugram-based SaaS company selling HR and payroll software to mid-size Indian companies, about four hundred clients, and this role is in the onboarding team that takes new clients live within thirty days. I also read about the mobile attendance product you launched last year. Anything specific about the team I should know before the next round?

Screener checks: that you looked, which most candidates on a cold call have not.

Say this answer out loud

Why do you want to join us?

Three reasons. The role is a step up to owning client onboarding end to end, which I have done only partly. The product is in a space I know, since I handled payroll queries for two years. And the company is at a size where I can see the impact of my work. I am also looking for a better package, but that is not the first reason.

Screener checks: anything beyond 'good company, good growth'.

Say this answer out loud

What are your strengths?

Two that matter here. I am organised under volume: sixty tickets a day for two years without missing an SLA, using a priority sheet I built myself. And I stay calm with angry customers; my escalation CSAT was higher than my regular CSAT, which my manager found funny. I am working on being more concise in writing.

Screener checks: two strengths with evidence, not adjectives.

Say this answer out loud

What is your biggest weakness?

I used to take on too many tasks and struggle to say no, which caused a couple of late deliveries in my first year. For the last year I keep a visible task list and tell my lead when a new request will push something else, before I accept it. Better, not solved.

Screener checks: a real weakness with a fix in progress, under thirty seconds.

Say this answer out loud

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Leading a small onboarding or customer success team in a product company, having gone deep on one product rather than switching every two years, and having handled at least one large enterprise client end to end. If this company grows the way its last two years suggest, that path exists here.

Screener checks: realism and whether the path exists in their company.

Say this answer out loud

Are you planning higher studies or any government exam?

No. I considered an MBA two years ago and decided against it; the fee and two years out of work did not make sense, and I am clear on that. I am not writing any government exam. If I study further it would be a part-time certification in my field, which would not affect the job.

Screener checks: a live exit risk. A clear no with the reason you considered it is more convincing than a flat no.

Say this answer out loud

Can you speak in English for the rest of the call? The client is a UK process.

Of course. I worked on a voice process for a UK telecom client for eight months, about eighty calls a day, so I am used to the accent and to customers who speak fast. Please go ahead with your questions.

Screener checks: fluency and no panic at the switch. How smoothly you switch matters more than what you say.

Say this answer out loud

Describe your current role in two lines.

I am an accounts executive at a Surat textile exporter. I handle accounts payable for about two hundred vendors, GST filing with our CA, and the monthly MIS for the owner, in Tally and Excel.

Screener checks: that you can be brief when asked. Two lines means two lines.

Say this answer out loud

Is there anything in your profile that could come up in background verification?

One thing I would rather tell you now. I left my first company in 2023 without serving full notice because of a family emergency in Ranchi; I served twenty of thirty days and the relieving letter mentions it. I have the letter and the email trail. Nothing else: no gaps, no disputes, all documents original.

Screener checks: surprises later. Disclosing a small issue builds trust; hiding it ends the process.

Say this answer out loud

What questions do you have for me?

Three quick ones. What are the next rounds and the likely timeline? Is the role work-from-office, and at which location? And who would it report to, so that I can prepare? Could you also send the job description and your contact details by email?

Screener checks: engagement. Ask about process, not salary; the full list is in questions to ask at the end of an interview.

Say this answer out loud

We will get back to you. Is there anything else?

Just a confirmation: I will send my updated resume and the documents you mentioned today. If I do not hear back within a week, may I message you on this number? Thank you for considering me; I am keen on this role.

Screener checks: nothing, but a clear close gets you remembered among twenty calls.

Say this answer out loud

The line is breaking. Can you hear me?

I can hear you partly. Let me move to a better spot; please give me ten seconds. If the call drops, I will call you back on this number immediately, or you can reach me on WhatsApp call at the same number. Could you repeat the last question? I heard up to the part about the notice period.

Screener checks: composure. Saying what you heard and offering a fallback is the professional way to handle a bad line.

Say this answer out loud

Poor network, noise and switching between Hindi and English

  1. 1

    Own the network problem early

If you hear crackle in the first minute, say so: 'The line is weak at my end; if it drops I will call you right back.' Then do exactly that, within a minute, from a better spot. A candidate who calls back promptly scores higher than one with a perfect line who sounds bored.

  2. 2

Repeat what you heard before answering

On a weak line, say 'You are asking about my notice period, correct?' before the answer. It costs three seconds and prevents a wrong answer to a misheard question, the single most common phone-screen mistake.

  3. 3

Offer a WhatsApp or internet call only after the line fails twice

Most consultancies are fine with it, but offer it as a fallback. Never ask the caller to text you the questions instead; that reads as avoiding the spoken test.

  4. 4

Follow the caller's language, then settle

Many Indian screeners open in Hindi or a mix. Reply in the language they use for the first exchange, then move to English for anything about your work, with technical words in English. If asked to continue in English, do it without a pause or apology. From a Hindi-medium background, rehearse the eight status questions above in English until they are automatic; see English for job interviews (Hindi medium).

  5. 5

Do not mix mid-sentence on client-facing roles

'Mera current CTC six point four hai' is normal with a consultancy, but for a support, sales or client-facing role the recruiter is grading your English on this very call. Finish each sentence in the language you started it in.

  6. 6

    Numbers slowly, names spelled

Say CTC, dates and percentages slowly; spell your email and surname with words ('P for Pune'). Screeners type while you speak, and a wrong digit in your CTC on the form becomes your CTC in the next round.

Red flags of a fake interview call

Fake job calls copy the format of the real screening round, which is why they work. The full genuine-versus-fake table and the reporting steps are in interview call letter and message format; the phone-specific signs are below. One rule covers most cases: no genuine employer or consultancy in India charges a candidate anything, at any stage, for any reason.

  • The caller will not name the hiring company, calls it 'a reputed MNC', or names one but cannot say which role, location or team.
  • You are 'selected' on the call itself, or after a five-minute telephonic round, with no further interview.
  • Any registration, verification, security-deposit, laptop or document fee, however small or 'refundable', or a UPI ID or payment link.
  • A request for an OTP, Aadhaar or PAN number, bank details or a card photo before any interview. Real verification happens after an offer, through a documented process.
  • Pressure to decide in hours, an unrealistic salary, or a 'last two seats' message.
  • Follow-up only on WhatsApp from a personal number, with no email from the company's own domain. Ask for an email; a real recruiter sends one.
  • An international call showing as +91. The Sanchar Saathi portal lets you report such calls and, through its Chakshu facility, suspected fraud calls, SMS and WhatsApp messages; if money has already been lost, call 1930 or file at cybercrime.gov.in.

Verify in two minutes

Search the company's official careers page for the role and the recruiter's name. Call the number on the company website, not the one that called you, and ask whether the drive is real. Large employers such as TCS and Infosys publish fraud alerts on their careers sites. Until that check is done, share nothing beyond what is already on your resume.

Practise the telephonic round with the AI recruiter

People fail phone screens on delivery, not content: answers that run long, numbers that come out wrong, a flat voice with no face to carry it. The Englio customer success and support mock is the closest match to the real screen: a twelve-minute voice-only one-on-one with a recruiter who runs the status questions, then tests role fit with a de-escalation role-play and shift and resilience questions, with a sudden switch to English, in English, Hindi or Hinglish as you choose.

What is scoredWhat the AI recruiter listens for
BrevityStatus answers that land the fact in the first sentence and finish inside forty-five seconds
ConsistencyCTC, notice period, location and exam plans matching across the call, as a consultancy would cross-check
Role fitA yes with evidence on shifts, relocation, domain and skills, not a vague maybe
VoicePace, clarity on numbers and names, fillers, and a smooth switch to English
ComposureHandling an interruption, a repeated question or a simulated bad line
CloseAsking about process and getting next steps confirmed

You get a transcript with timings per answer, the fastest way to see which answers ran long. Do the call once with notes and once without; the second run predicts the real screen. For the full loop after the screen, run the customer success and support interview as a panel; for the phone-to-video progression, take the Phone, Video and AI Video Interviews course. Students screened for internships should also read internship interview questions.

Frequently asked questions

What questions are asked in a telephonic interview in India?
Status questions first: are you working, notice period, current and expected CTC, location and relocation, reason for change, and for freshers the passing year and backlogs. Then role-fit questions from the job description: years in each skill, domain, shifts, travel, contract versus permanent. Then short HR questions to judge communication: tell me about yourself, why this company, strengths, weakness, higher studies, and whether you have questions. This page gives spoken answers to thirty of them.
How long should answers be on a phone interview?
Thirty to forty-five seconds for most questions, and two lines when the caller asks for two lines. The recruiter is filling a form while you speak, so lead with the fact (the number, the yes or no, the role name) and add one supporting sentence. Save the two-minute versions for the face-to-face or video round with the hiring manager.
What should I do if the network is bad during a telephonic round?
Say so in the first minute, move to a better spot, and repeat the question you heard before answering it. If the call drops, call back within a minute. Offer a WhatsApp or internet call only after the regular line fails twice. Never ask the caller to text you the questions; the spoken round is the test.
Can I answer a telephonic interview in Hindi?
Follow the caller's language for the opening, then move to English for anything about your work, with technical words in English. If asked to continue in English, switch at once without apologising. For support, sales and client-facing roles, the recruiter is grading your English on the call itself, so finish each sentence in the language you started it in.
How do I know if an interview call is fake?
A fake call will not name the company clearly, selects you on the call itself, asks for any fee or deposit, wants an OTP, Aadhaar, PAN or bank details before an interview, and follows up only on WhatsApp from a personal number. Verify by calling the number on the company's official website and checking its careers page. Report suspected fraud calls on the Sanchar Saathi portal; if you have paid, call 1930.
How can I practise phone interview questions out loud?
Write your status sheet (CTC, notice, dates, percentages), then answer the thirty questions above on a real call to a friend, and cut any answer over forty-five seconds. Then run the Englio customer success and support mock as a voice-only call: it asks the status and role-fit questions, switches language, simulates a bad line, and gives a transcript with per-answer timings.
