What this interview looks like
Amazon India typically starts with an online assessment: for SDEs two coding problems plus a work-style or work-simulation section, and for operations roles a work-style and situational assessment. The SDE loop is typically two to four interviews of 45 to 60 minutes, each split between a coding or design problem and Leadership Principles questions in STAR form.
Campus candidates typically see two or three rounds, and lateral candidates a phone screen plus a loop covering coding, low-level design, high-level design and a hiring-manager conversation.
One interviewer in the loop is a Bar Raiser from another team who is trained to hold the standard and can veto, and the debrief is a written discussion of evidence against the Leadership Principles.
Area Manager and operations candidates, hired from engineering and MBA campuses and laterally, typically see two to three interviews that mix Leadership Principles stories with operations cases such as a shift behind plan or a safety incident, and may include a site visit.
Round counts, their order and timelines vary by team, role and year, and Amazon does not publish cut-offs, so treat what you read online as a pattern.
Englio compresses the loop into a 17-minute panel: an HR screen, a hiring-manager round on your past work through the Leadership Principles, a coding or design or operations round in your chosen specialisation, a Leadership Principles behavioural round in STAR form, and a closing on expectations, scored on role knowledge, problem solving, communication and attitude.
How it is weighted
The decision rests on Leadership Principles evidence, with Ownership, Deliver Results, Earn Trust, Insist on the Highest Standards and Hire and Develop the Best weighed most for people leaders, plus operational judgement in the cases and comfort with numbers. Candidates who cannot describe leading people through a hard shift, or who treat safety as negotiable, are declined.
Here each round is scored against the corporate rubric (role knowledge 30, problem solving 25, communication 25, attitude 20).
Who this is for
Candidates who have cleared Amazon's online work-style and situational assessment for operations roles, through campus hiring at engineering and management institutes, Pathways-style leadership programmes, or lateral application. Interviews typically mix Leadership Principles stories with operations cases and may include a site walk. Amazon does not publish cut-offs or a fixed loop; the pattern here is what candidates typically report.
The panel focuses on
- What an Area Manager runs in a fulfilment centre, sortation centre or delivery station, told back accurately
- Leadership Principles stories from leading people, with measurable results
- Operations cases: a shift behind plan, a spike in missed deliveries, a safety near-miss
- Metrics aloud: units per hour, defects, on-time delivery, peak-day staffing arithmetic
- People leadership with associates and contract staff, and safety that is never negotiable
- Realistic expectations of shift work, festival peaks and location flexibility
