Paytm — software engineer & merchant business development interviews

Paytm's hiring loop for software engineers on its consumer and merchant platforms and for its large merchant-facing business development teams. The mock covers the data-structures, design and reliability conversation engineers face, the field-sales, merchant-economics and collections conversation business development candidates face, and the questions Paytm panels ask about operating a payments business after the RBI action on Paytm Payments Bank and the shift to a multi-bank UPI model.

What this interview looks like

Paytm's engineering interviews typically begin with a coding screen, followed by one or two data-structures rounds, a design round that is low-level design for early-career candidates and high-level design for senior ones, and a hiring-manager round, with HR covering fitment, location and compensation at the end.

The panel is drawn from the hiring team and interviews run over video or at the Noida campus. Candidates have reported that panels probe how a system behaves when a partner bank or NPCI is slow, because since 2024 Paytm has run UPI through partner banks as a third-party app provider rather than through its own payments bank.

Merchant business development roles, which Paytm hires for in large numbers across cities, typically have a shorter loop: a conversation with the area or city sales manager on field experience and targets, a role-play on pitching a Soundbox or card machine to a shopkeeper, and an HR round on location, travel and incentive structure.

Team-lead roles add a conversation with the zonal head. Round counts and durations vary by team and city, so treat them as typical.

Englio compresses the loop into a 17-minute panel: HR screen, a hiring-manager round on your work and a Paytm scenario, a role round in your chosen specialisation, a short STAR behavioural round and a closing on expectations, scored on role knowledge, problem solving, communication and attitude.

How scoring works

A report you can act on

  1. Every round is scored on the rubric

Each interviewer scores only the criteria their round covers. Weights add up to your overall score out of 100.

  2. Only what you actually said counts

Feedback quotes your own answers. Rounds you skip show as “Not assessed” rather than a zero.

  3. Communication is always measured

Fluency, clarity, confidence and structure are tracked across the whole interview, in any language.

  4. Pass mark, then a plan

You see the pass mark for this interview, your gaps, and the courses that close them fastest.
