HCL / TechM Campus Interview

HCLTech TechBee, HCLTech Graduate Engineer & Tech Mahindra fresher

From our research

What this interview looks like

All six companies screen on online assessments first: aptitude and reasoning, an English or communication test, a pseudo-code or technical MCQ section and, increasingly, one or two coding problems, with the coding score often deciding higher tracks such as Cognizant GenC Next or Capgemini Senior Analyst.

Shortlisted students then face an interview that is often a single combined technical-plus-HR conversation of twenty to forty minutes, sometimes split into a technical round with a project lead and a separate HR round.

The technical interviewer checks programming fundamentals in the language you claim, OOP, DBMS and SQL, basic data structures, your final-year project and a small problem talked through aloud. For TechBee it is Class 12 mathematics, logic and communication instead.

HR probes your introduction, why this company, relocation to any location, the service agreement or training commitment where your offer has one, shift flexibility and the fit between your resume and what you actually did.

Cut-offs, packages and the exact round structure change every season and differ by campus, so treat the specifics here as the typical pattern, not a promise. Englio compresses the loop into one seventeen-minute panel: HR screen, hiring-manager round on your projects and internships, technical round in your chosen programme track, a STAR behavioural round and a closing on expectations.

You get a scored report on role knowledge, problem solving, communication and attitude.

How it is weighted

TechBee selection runs through an online career aptitude test and a Versant English test before an interview on communication, Class 12 mathematics and logic, basic computer awareness and family and financial clarity about the programme. HCLTech graduate and Tech Mahindra interviews are typically a technical round plus an HR round, each an elimination step in real life.

Scored here against the corporate rubric.

Who this is for

TechBee is for recent Class 12 pass-outs who meet a board-wise minimum aggregate that HCLTech publishes (60 to 75 percent depending on the board) and, for IT roles, at least 60 percent in mathematics or business mathematics.

It is a twelve-month programme of classroom training and on-the-job training on live projects, leading to a full-time role, with an option to pursue a part-time degree through partner universities such as BITS Pilani and IIIT Kottayam. The programme fee and any agreement terms are set out in HCLTech's offer.

HCLTech's graduate engineer trainee intake and Tech Mahindra's fresher roles take final-year students, typically with 60 to 65 percent and no active backlog, screened through aptitude, English or written communication, technical and coding assessments. Specifics vary by season and campus.

The panel focuses on

  • TechBee: speaking clearly about yourself, Class 12 maths and logic, why work-and-study at eighteen
  • Graduate: C, Java or Python fundamentals, OOP, DBMS, networking basics
  • Tech Mahindra: written-communication follow-through, aptitude under pressure, basic coding
  • Project and internship ownership with honest limits
  • Relocation, shifts, service agreement and training-period expectations
  • STAR answers on teamwork, deadlines and feedback

What to expect

5 rounds · 17 minutes

A private-sector hiring loop compressed into one sitting, the way most Indian companies run it: HR screen → hiring-manager round on your actual work → role/technical round led by a lead → communication & behavioural (STAR) round → closing on expectations and your questions.

Works for software, product, sales, finance, HR, support and campus hiring by swapping the role bank.

Sample questions

IT services campus (CTS / Capgemini / HCL / TechM / LTIM / IBM) HCL / TechM campus interview questions

Questions panels commonly ask in the IT services campus (CTS / Capgemini / HCL / TechM / LTIM / IBM) HCL / TechM campus interview, with what a strong answer covers. Practise them aloud with the AI panel.

  1. TechBee motivation

For TechBee: you have just finished Class 12. Introduce yourself and tell me why you want to start working at eighteen instead of going to college full time.

    What a strong answer covers

A clear, simple introduction with your stream, a subject you enjoy and a genuine reason such as early independence, practical learning and the sponsored degree. Show your family supports it. Avoid sounding as if you are doing it only because of low marks.

  2. Class 12 maths

For TechBee: if a shopkeeper gives a twenty percent discount on a ₹1,500 shirt and then charges five percent GST on the discounted price, what do you pay?

    What a strong answer covers

Discounted price is ₹1,200; five percent GST adds ₹60, so the total is ₹1,260. Say each step aloud and check your arithmetic. Avoid applying both percentages to the original price.

  3. Logical reasoning

For TechBee: all roses are flowers and some flowers fade quickly. Can we say some roses fade quickly? Explain your reasoning.

    What a strong answer covers

No, the conclusion does not necessarily follow, because the flowers that fade quickly may not be roses. Explain using a simple diagram or example. Avoid answering yes without checking logic.

  4. C programming

For the HCLTech graduate role: a C program frees a block of memory and later writes through the same address. What goes wrong, and how do you guard against it?

    What a strong answer covers

Explain that the pointer still holds the old address after free, so writing through it is a dangling-pointer bug with undefined behaviour: crashes, silent corruption or security holes. Guard by setting the pointer to NULL after freeing, clear ownership rules and tools such as Valgrind. Avoid saying the compiler will catch it.

  5. Networking

What is the difference in purpose between TCP and UDP, and which would a video-calling app prefer?

    What a strong answer covers

TCP guarantees ordered, reliable delivery; UDP is faster with no guarantee. Video calls usually prefer UDP because a late frame is useless, with the app handling some loss. Avoid saying UDP is unreliable so never used.

  6. Written communication

For Tech Mahindra: write a short email aloud to your manager explaining that a task will be one day late and why.

    What a strong answer covers

Clear subject, polite greeting, the delay and reason in one or two lines, the new date, any help needed and a closing. Keep it brief and professional. Avoid excuses or casual language.

  7. Training expectations

During training you will be assessed regularly, and failing may affect your job. How will you prepare?

    What a strong answer covers

Show you understand that training assessments are graded and can affect confirmation, then give a concrete plan: revising programming and DBMS basics before joining, a daily study slot during training, practising mock tests and asking trainers early when stuck. Cite a past exam you prepared for well. Avoid assuming training is easy or a formality.

  8. Teamwork

Describe a time your team missed a deadline in a college project. What did you learn?

    What a strong answer covers

A STAR answer: the project, why the deadline slipped such as poor planning or a late dependency, your own part in it, how the team recovered, and the planning habit you changed afterwards, like weekly check-ins or splitting work earlier. Avoid blaming teammates or the guide, or claiming you personally were never responsible.

  9. Offer terms

Are you comfortable with the service agreement, relocation and rotational shifts mentioned in the offer?

    What a strong answer covers

Show that you have read the terms, understand the commitment period and any amount involved, and have discussed relocation and shifts with your family. State any genuine constraint now. Avoid a casual yes without knowing what you are agreeing to, or hinting that you might leave before the term ends.

How scoring works

A report you can act on

  1. Every round is scored on the rubric

Each interviewer scores only the criteria their round covers. Weights add up to your overall score out of 100.

  2. Only what you actually said counts

Feedback quotes your own answers. Rounds you skip show as “Not assessed” rather than a zero.

  3. Communication is always measured

Fluency, clarity, confidence and structure are tracked across the whole interview, in any language.

  4. Pass mark, then a plan

You see the pass mark for this interview, your gaps, and the courses that close them fastest.
